Walking The Line
Hello everyone, so for today's post on here i thought i would share a little about how my Social Anxiety and OCD effects me in my daily life. This is more for those of you who have never really heard of either of these yet so you can see how it effects people, those who already know may find this interesting but may want to just skip it.
Ok first off i have recently started a job at Walmart as Maintenance (and don't you go off telling me to get a real job when i have already said a million times in my other blogs that i am trying to become a commercial Blogger and Photographer, and that this job is just a filler until i succeed). Mostly i am cleaning the floors and putting merchandise back where it came from, and moping. While it is not the most socially active job there, every associate is expected to help customers with their purchases. So naturally i get asked questions a lot by customers about our products. Now i have no idea what goes through the mind of the average person when they meet someone new, but for me its' ussualy something like sudden panic and wishing i could just disappear into thin air. Luckily i am still able to just smile and help to the best of my ability, but it still bugs me every-time i am approached by a customer or someone i don't know very well.
This is not just the customers either thou, it is also with my fellow associates and the managers there, every time they talk to me it's the same reaction. With management it is worse, probably because i am always afraid of doing something wrong in front of them and getting in trouble. Another thing is we are suppose to follow this 10 foot rule, in which every time we come at least 10 feet of a customer we are to acknowledge them and ask if they need anything. While i have been keeping an eye out for customers if they need anything i have yet to be able to bring myself to ask them if they need help. Every time i try to the words just wont come out. Also sometimes when i am trying to talk to a customer i don't know the words just die in my mouth and i have to repeat myself which is annoying.
Now as i have mentioned before one common side problem with Social Anxiety Disorder is OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This is when you feel you have certain things done a certain way or else something bad will happen. It also makes you highly afraid of germs. So being part of the clean up crew in the grocery store you can just imagine what that is like at times. Luckily we wear gloves all the time so i don't have to actually touch anything with my bear hands. But still it can be annoying from time to time. Also one habit i have is making sure doors are shut all the way before i leave a room. When ever i open and close the fridge or freezer i always have to double check it to make sure it is closed which gets me weird looks from time to time.
So that should give you a good look at day to day life with Social anxiety Disorder and OCD. I have some plans to help improve my anxiety which i will outline in future post here. So keep a look out for those.
